2014 - 10 - 20: Day 1 - Adventure Along the Blue Ridge Parkway - getting there

From Buffalo New York to Winchester Virginia
Distance Traveled:  350 miles

Hwy 219 through the Allegheny National Forest
Leaving Buffalo, the hardest part of the journey was finding hwy 219 south.

A GPS has a one track mind when it comes to staying on the interstate!  Once on hwy 219 though, the GPS had no choice but to find the shortest way south through the Allegheny mountains.

Ridgway Pennsylvania

The route south was scenic and lovely even through the occasional misty rain.  The small towns of Pennsylvania that we passed were picturesque.  The roads wind through the valleys and the peaks of the Allegheny Mountains.

Once we crossed the border of Maryland we were on interstates and made really good time.  Passing through Hancock followed the Potomac River east on I-70 to Hagerstown for a stop at Sam's Club for
where we filled the gas tank and picked up some road foods.  We also used the wifi to book our hotel for the night and chose to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn in Winchester Virginia.

The drive south on I-81 took us across the Potomac River through the narrow portion of West Virginia and soon we were in Virginia and arrived at our hotel where we settled in for a quiet evening.

Tomorrow we slow down as we start to explore the mountain road.
